As part of the EdCounsel team, Tom Smith is a strong advocate for public education and provides timely and accurate advice to school leaders on a wide variety of matters – from personnel and student matters, to contracts and bidding. He works hard to earn the trust of our clients and provide the legal advice they need. Tom’s advocacy for public education began with his own educational path. Having grown up in the St. Louis area, he attended school in the Fort Zumwalt School District from kindergarten through high school. He later went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree at Truman State University, where he majored in Justice Systems and minored in English. Tom later received his Juris Doctorate from Mizzou.

Prior to joining the EdCounsel team, Tom practiced with a general defense firm in Jefferson City. His practice focused on a range of matters, including general litigation, environmental law, and administrative law. He has represented clients in state courts throughout Missouri and before a variety of administrative agencies. Tom now uses his experience handling an extensive array of legal issues to provide advice to school leaders facing new and challenging problems on a daily basis.

Tom enjoys spending his free time with his family and friends, both in the Columbia area and back in St. Louis. He is also actively involved in the youth rugby community in Missouri. Tom is the head coach of the Jefferson City Rugby Club’s high school boys’ team, and he also volunteers his time as general counsel to Missouri Youth Rugby, the governing body of youth rugby in the state.
